Smokey Joe - The smokehouses

The smokehouses on Bornholm reflect the tradition and soul of the island, and their chimneys can be seen almost everywhere and are an integral part of the image of the island.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were many small and large smokehouses on Bornholm. The fish were smoked all over the island's coast. Due to legislative changes and a sharp decline in the herring population in the Baltic Sea, you can see the smokestacks everywhere, but only a few of them are still in operation.
